Henryk Sienkiewicz, inspired by his travels through Africa, tells the story of two children abducted in Egypt at the time of the Mahdi after the death of General Gordon, and of their flight through Africa to the Indian Ocean. The novel was filmed twice. It was translated in French under the title Le Gouffre noir.
