Résumé
The book describes the history and adventures, very often ignored, of the inhabitants of Nantucket, an island about 30 miles (50 km) by ferry south from Cape Cod in the US state of Massachusetts.
Although the name of this island could take its origin from an Indian Alconquian name perhaps meaning “faraway land or island” or “sandy, sterile soil tempting no one”, someone could imagined that, before being a tourist destination, this island was during centuries a territory isolated in the Atlantic Ocean from all the world history and business. In fact, the dynamic inhabitants were, since the first discovery by Europeans, at the center of many international events and business activities all around the world.
