PIE Laryngeals - Saussure’s Legacy

The book features a bilingual edition of a short paper and of a longer work by Ferdinand de Saussure (1857–1913), which led him to posit the algebraic coefficients sonantiques, now better-known as laryngeals among present-day comparatists and linguists, in the Mémoire sur le système primitif des voyelles dans les langues indo-européennes (1879). A much lesser-known paper by Saussure is his Essai, published in 1877, where his ideas were still in the making. It is of paramount importance to read what Saussure actually wrote.
